Description
Goan Chana Doce / Chonya Doce Recipe is a soft and sweet fudge, one of traditional Goan Christmas sweets. This Chana dal fudge is prepared with chana dal, sugar, coconut, ghee and cardamon. This goan doce is popular at weddings, Christmas, festivals, and other occasions. Check how to make goan doce sweet with chana dal and coconut at home.

- 250 grams (1 cup) chana dal / spilit bengal gram
- 1 grated coconut (approx. 300 grams) / 200 grams desiccated coconut
- 400 grams (2 cups) granulated sugar
- 1 + 1/2 tablespoon ghee
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- For Goan Chana Doce, rinse and soak the chana dal in water for at least 2 – 3 hours. Cook the dal in the pressure cooker for 3 whistles with enough water. Let the dal cool down then drain it. Reserve the cooked dal’s water for further use.
- Grind the cooked chana dal to a smooth paste. Transfer the dal paste to a heavy bottom dry pan/wok.
- Grind the grated coconut to a smooth, fine, and thick paste with little reserved water. Transfer the coconut paste to the pan along with the dal paste. Add the sugar and a little salt pinch. Mix them very well.
- On medium heat, keep the pan and stir continuously with a flat wooden spoon. Keep stirring for nearly 20 minutes or until it starts thickening.
- Add ghee and cardamom powder, and mix well. On lower heat, stir continuously (clockwise and anticlockwise direction).
- Continue stirring till the mixture thickens and starts leaving the pan’s side. It should form together like a ball. It takes nearly 30 – 35 minutes. Turn off the heat, the Goan Coconut Doce is ready.
- FInally grease the wooden board, and transfer the hot mixture on it. Spread the mixture to 1/2 inch thickness, with a greased rolling pin. Let it get cooled slightly for 10 minutes.
- Cut Goan Chana Dal Doce / Doce De Grao into diamond shapes with greased knife. Let Goan Doce Sweet cool completely and then it’s ready to store or serve.
Notes
- the dal can also be cooked on the stovetop with water till it gets soft.
- it is better to use a wooden spoon while preparing the goan coconut doce
- can make the design on the doce using the fork.
- making goan doce with dessiccated coconut makes stirring easier, but the grated coconut tastes better
- it is better to stir continuously to avoid the doce mixture burning and sticking to the pan.
