Parsi Fish in White Sauce (saas ni machhi)

Saas ni Machhi is made from Pomfret which is the common fish used for this recipe or any white fish can be used. It is very tasty Parsi dish. I have cooked this Parsi Fish in White Sauce many times and very delicious. This is also served at Parsi Weddings with rice. The egg, vinegar and sugar in the ingredients gives a real punch to the dish.
Ingredients
- 1Â lb filleted white fish
- 3Â cloves garlic
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp chilli powder
- 2 tbsp oil
- 2Â onions sliced
- 3Â green chillies
- 2 cups water
- salt
- 3 tbsp cornflour
- 1Â Egg
- 4 tbsp vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar (according to taste)
- Lemon wedges to garnish
Instructions
- Cut the fish into 8 pieces
- Crush the garlic and mix it to a paste with the cumin and chilli powder
- Heat the oil oil in a large pan
- Add onions and fry until they are golden brown
- Then add whole chillies and garlic and spice paste
- Continue frying for about 1 minute until spices darken
- Pour water and cook for 5 minutes and then add salt to taste
- Mix the cornflour to smooth paste with a little cold water, then stir it into the sauce
- Add the fish pieces to the sauce and cook until the fish is tender, stirring gently
- Beat the egg with vinegar and stir it into the sauce
- Add sugar to taste and cook for 2-3 minutes
- Garnish with lemon wedges while serving
