Goan Coconut Sorak Curry

The Coconut is the basic ingredient, and mostly everyone’s favorite recipe to make Goan Coconut Curry. The sorak veg curry is mostly served with pickles or dried fried.

The sorak is prepared mostly during the monsoon season, when there is shortage of fish or heavy rains. I always enjoyed this sorak curry my mom’s recipe which was prepared during my childhood.

It is not only a simple monsoon curry, fish or vegetable (your choice) also can be added to this goan curry. It is further prepared into a delicious fish curry or veg curry.

The sorak can be served with steamed boiled rice, pickles, papads, dried fish fried and you will enjoy this Goan Coconut Curry.

How To Make Goan Sorak Coconut Curry

  1. For Grinding Goan Sorak Paste, add all the ingredients in this section in the mixer. Add little water and grind to a smooth fine paste. After grinding keep the paste aside. Add little water in the mixer and mix it well and store the water for further cooking.
  2. For Goan Sorak Curry, heat oil in any cooking pan, add onions and fry till transparent. Add slit green chillies and fry for few seconds. Then add the grinded masala paste and saute for 3 – 4 minutes. Now add stored water (from the mixer) and kokum. Sitr and mix very well. Add little more water according to your need (for curry thickness).
  3. Add salt. Mix well. Get it to a boil and then cover the cooking pan with a lid and cook for 7 – 8 minutes. The Goan Veg Monsoon Sorak Curry is ready to be served.

Ingredients

For Grinding Goan Sorak Paste

  • 1/2 cup freshly grated coconut
  • 4 dry kashmiri chillies
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tbsp coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 3 – 4 peppercorns (optional)

For Goan Sorak Curry

  • 1 medium onion chopped finely
  • 1 slit green chilly
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 kokums
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. For Goan Sorak Curry, grind together the ingredients in the grinding with water to a fine smooth paste and keep it aside. Add some water to the mixer jar and restore the water for further cooking.
  2. Heat oil in the cooking pan, add the onions and fry till transparent.
  3. Add the slit green chilly and fry few seconds
  4. Then add the grinded masala and saute for 3 – 4 minutes.
  5. Then add the water restored for further cooking and kokum, and mix it very well.
  6. Add more water if required according to your curry thickness
  7. Add the salt to taste
  8. Bring this to a boil and then cover the lid and let it cook to 7 -8 minutes.
  9. After that the Goan Veg Sorak is ready,  the Monsoon Curry can be served with steamed boiled rice, pickles, pappad, dried fish fried and you will enjoy this Goan Coconut Curry.

Wow this goan sorak with coconut milk, prepared it by adding fish pieces. The taste was toooo good.
